The floor joists are 150 x 50 mm fixed at 400 mm centres. They pass either side of the concrete pier without touching; the gap ensures vibrations from the floor are not transmitted to the scope.
A small post was introduced below the corner of the step (on its own concrete pad), as I wanted to minimise any deflection.
